Abstract (eng): | In this Master's thesis finite element modelling of cutting processes is dealt with from the point of view of the demands of industry. In industrial production cutting processes involve high costs, which make the choice of the right values for process parameters extremely important. The choice of the right process parameters requires thorough knowledge of the process, which is at present achieved mostly with empirical means. The cutting experiments are expensive, which increases the need for alternative methods to study the process, such as simulation. In this study the typical cutting methods are presented briefly: turning, milling and drilling. In addition, the basics of the finite element method, continuum mechanics and numerical solution methods and other researchers' publications of the subject are presented in the research review. The studies have been divided into four parts: cutting forces and temperature, friction and tool wearing, residual stresses and material models. The actual research section of this study deals with the usability and ability to predict the true values for the cutting phenomenon of two commercial cutting simulation software. The examined software are Advant Edge and Deform. In this research three simulation series of cutting experiments were made to verify the results. The simulation series were turning experiments, drilling experiments and tests examining residual stresses. It was observed that the simulation results were moderately well congruent with the test values, but the accuracy of the simulation results could still worked on. The results can be improved by using the simulation and cutting experiments together, in which case the simulations are calibrated with cutting tests. It was observed that the development of calculation, modeling and information technology will improve the accuracy of the method to a level were only few cutting tests will have to be performed. It is vital that the Finnish industry invests in researching and adapting the method, because the demands for efficiency will be ever higher in the future, and self supported knowhow in the optimization of the processes will be a big competitive advantage. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään lastuavan työstön elementtimallintamista teollisuuden käyttötarpeiden kannalta. |
