Abstract (eng): Although the main idea of sustainability is fairly simple, it is hard to quantity how sustainable some kind of production or other activity is.
Existing models and tools assess sustain ability mainly on a national or corporate level.
The purpose of this Master's Thesis is to create a model which quantifies sustainability of a mill or part of a mill in pulp and paper industry.

The model within this work takes into account environmental sustainability for pulp mill.
It defines eight main indicators and several sub indicators which are used to calculate index that represents sustainability.
The quality of the model is examined through four case mills, which are analysed with a tool based on the developed model.

The model can be used for benchmarking and comparing different pulp mills or for pointing weak and strong areas in order to improve mill's sustainability performance.
Recommendations for developing of the model include adding the paper mill and other sustainability dimensions into the model.
Abstract (fin): Vaikka kestävän kehityksen käsite on periaatteessa yksinkertainen, tietyn toiminnan kestävän kehityksen suuruus on vaikea määrittää ja mitata.
Olemassa olevat mallit ja työkalut käsittelevät kestävää kehitystä laajemmassa mittakaavassa eli pääasiassa valtion tai yrityksen tasolla.
Tämän työn tarkoitus on kehittää malli, joka määrittää kestävän kehityksen indeksin tehtaille tai osalle tehdasta.

Malli kattaa kestävän kehityksen ympäristöllisen näkökulman sellutehtaasta.
Siinä määritetään kahdeksan pääindikaattoria sekä useita alaindikaattoreita, joiden avulla lasketaan kestävän kehityksen indeksi.
Mallin toimivuutta tarkasteltiin neljän case-tehtaan avulla, jotka analysoitiin työkalulla, joka laskee indeksin kehitetyn mallin mukaisesti.

Mallia voidaan käyttää erilaisten sellutehtaiden vertailuun tai hyvien ja huonojen osa-alueiden määrittämiseen, mistä on apua tehtaan kestävyyden parantamiseen.
Jatkokehitys suosituksiin kuuluu muun muassa paperitehtaiden sekä kestävän kehityksen muiden elementtien sisällyttäminen malliin.
