Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): "The idea of mapping the cycling conditions in Helsinki with a small group by bike eventually turned into an e-participation pilot study, Fillarikanava," says the founder of Fillarikanava, Antti Poikola.
The aim of Fillarikanava is to develop the use of open data as a participation tool in the planning of cycling conditions.
It is shown that in addition to the traditional participation methods, the developments of e-participation methods are needed.
The planners often feel that participation is a burden because it requires extra work and the citizens in turn complain their inability to participate in matters concerning their own environment.

The goal for this thesis was to find out how e-participation tool that uses open data, like Fillarikanava, can be utilized in planning and especially in interaction between citizens and planners.
The thesis examines this with two questions: How Fillarikanava is able to answer to the challenges in the traditional participation and how Fillarikanava can be utilized by planners.
The thesis is mostly a qualitative study of Fillarikanava and its main research methods are qualitative data analysis and surveys.
Theory behind the thesis is based on key concepts like interaction and e-participation.

According to the results of the research, the challenges related to the participation in cycling conditions in Helsinki are very similar compared to previous researches.
The case study showed that Fillarikanava is used by cyclist and open discussion led to constructive commenting between users.
The planners would mostly use Fillarikanava in their work to collect data from present state or as support material for decision making.

In conclusion, this research showed that Fillarikanava has the potential to be a participation channel between citizens and planners, because it reduces the work load of planners and gives an opportunity to a real?time database to the citizens.
However, in terms of usable participation method Fillarikanava requires input from both planners and citizens.
Abstract (fin): "Idea kartoittaa Helsingin kaupungin pyöräilyolosuhteita fillareilla yhdessä kaveriporukan kanssa kartta kädessä, muuttui tuumailun ja yhteistyön avulla yhdeksi Helsingin kaupungin verkko-osallistumisen pilottikohteeksi: Fillarikanavaksi," kertoo Fillarikanavan perustaja Antti Poikola.
Helsingin kaupunki on lähtenyt Fillarikanava -pilottihankkeen myötä selvittämään, miten avointa verkkotyökalua voitaisiin hyödyntää virkamiestyössä.
Taustalla on suunnitteluprosessiin liittyvän osallistumisen ongelmakenttä.
Usein virkamiehet kokevat vuorovaikutuksen ja asukkaiden osallistumisen kuormittavana lisätyönä ja asukkaat puolestaan valittavat heikkoa osallistumisen tunnetta ja vaikuttavuutta oman elinympäristönsä asioihin.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten avointa osallistumisen keinoa, kuten Fillarikanavaa, voidaan hyödyntää asukkaiden ja virkamiesten välisessä suunnittelun vuorovaikutuksessa.
Tavoitetta tarkasteltiin kahden tutkimuskysymyksen avulla.
Ensimmäinen pureutui Fillarikanavan mahdollisuuksiin vastata perinteisessä vuorovaikutuksessa esiintyviin haasteisiin ja toinen Fillarikanavan hyödyntämismahdollisuuksiin virkamiestyössä.
Kysymyksiin haettiin vastauksia haastatteluiden, Fillarikanavaan kertyneen aineiston sekä kirjallisuuden perusteella.

Tulosten perusteella pyöräilyolosuhteisiin liittyvät osallistumisen haasteet ovat hyvin samankaltaisia kuin aiheeseen liittyvässä kirjallisuudessa on aiemmin todettu: kuormittuminen sekä heikko vaikuttavuuden tunne.
Tutkimus osoitti, että pyöräilijät ovat löytäneet Fillarikanavan ja käyttävät sitä asialliseen keskusteluun pyöräilyolosuhteista.
Keskustelumahdollisuuden todettiin osittain jopa parantavan viestien laatua.
Virkamiehet kokivat voivansa hyödyntää Fillarikanavan aineistoa suunnittelussa lähinnä lähtötietojen kerääjänä sekä päätöksentekoa tukevana materiaalina.

Yhteenvetona voidaan todeta, että Fillarikanavalla on potentiaalia olla yksi Helsingin pyöräilyoloja kehittävistä osallistumiskanavista, sillä se vähentää virkamiesten työmäärää sekä tarjoaa käyttäjille mahdollisuuden ajankohtaiseen tietokantaan.
Toimivuuden kannalta ehtona on kuitenkin toimiva kaksisuuntainen vuorovaikutus asukkaiden ja virkamiesten välillä.
