Abstract (eng): | Data centers are places, where favourable circumstances are arranged for servers and other data-related hardware to work properly non-stop. One major requirement is that the operation temperature of the hardware is kept on a low enough level. Device cooling produces intense noisy sound field to which the employees working in the data centers are exposed. In this thesis the characteristics of the data center noise are studied. The magnitude of the noise level and noise exposure are put to contrast with the specifications given in legislation and regulations. Also the spectral properties of the noise are investigated to understand the character of the noise signal. One main purpose of this thesis is to find out, how data center noise properties are simple and efficient to measure. It is also examined, how the acoustic properties of data centers could be changed and developed to lower the noise and exposure levels and how the working efficiency could be improved with alternative ways. The results of this work indicate that the noise level does not exceed the uppermost legislative functional limit values. Nevertheless, the noise level is so high that the employer is obliged to offer an employee a possibility to personal hearing protection. Noise level can be considered so high that it significantly hampers the ability to work. |
Abstract (fin): | Palvelinkeskukset ovat paikkoja, joissa palvelimille ja muille tietoteknisille laitteille on järjestetty otolliset olosuhteet toimia jatkuvasti ilman palvelukatkoksia. |
