Abstract (eng): The roots of Building Information Modeling (BIM) are in the 2-dimensional design and file-based systems.
BIM is a new way to handle design and construction projects with the help of one central model to which the data is entered only once and can be retrieved from being always up-to-date.

The purpose of the thesis was to make an overview of the situation of BIM (both models and modelling) and make a comparison of the Information Model Server solutions currently available for the Finnish infrastructure market.
In order to make the overview, the theoretical background of BIM as well as the relationship between BIM in the building sector and the infrastructure sector was examined.
Also concepts GIS and CAD were taken into account as the theoretical background for BIM.
In addition to the theoretical background, the current state on BIM internationally and in Finland was discussed.

To be able to compare the found Information Model Server solutions, a list of requirements was created and the solutions reflected against it.
The market researched showed that the amount of proper solutions is still limited and the comparison had to be made on a more general level of detailed requirements and functionality as intended originally.
Despite this, a comparison was made and as result one solution is recommended to use in the current market situation as an infrastructure project Information Model Server.
