Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Many spatial datasets have been opened during last year in Finland in consequence of establishing infrastructure for spatial information.
By definition, open data means datasets that have broad terms of use, reasonable pricing and are at everyone's disposal.
Trend of opening data affects companies that use, distribute or produce data.
The aim of this study was to examine how a company that sells and distributes spatial data should react to changing situation on the market.

The thesis began by defining open data and reviewing both legislative and market based reasons that have led to development of spatial information infrastructure and opening of data.
After literary review, five organisations that use or produce spatial data were interviewed in order to establish how open data will affect the market.
The purpose of the interviews was to determine and analyse how the organisations use spatial data and what challenges they face when using it.
The effects of open data on organisation's business practices, challenges that arise from using open data and interviewees' views on the future of spatial data market were also inquired.
Results were used to evaluate the scope and nature of services needed by the organisations in the future due opening of the data.

The interviewees were chosen from large organisations that use a lot of spatial data.
In majority of the organisations interviewed, business practices were not yet significantly affected by opening of data.
The interviews revealed that interviewees did not believe that open data would compete with paid datasets.
Therefore traditional ways to distribute and produce data should be continued.
However, open data was often used as an additional information source to critical datasets to give insight and to support business.
Thus services that enable and I ease the use of open data, such as interfaces and consultation, should be offered to organisations that use open data.
The biggest concerns regarding open data were the reliability on the quality of the data and the additional work caused by opening and processing data.
These concerns should be taken into account and responded by suitable services.
Abstract (fin): Suomessa on viimeisen vuoden aikana avautunut paljon paikkatietoaineistoja Inspire-direktiivin mukaisen paikkatietoinfrastruktuurin luomisen myötä.
Avoin tieto tarkoittaa aineistoa, jossa on sallivat käyttöehdot, sen voi saada käyttöönsä kuka tahansa ja sen hinta on kohtuullinen.
Aineistojen avautuminen vaikuttaa paikkatietoaineistoja käyttävien, tuottavien ja välittävien organisaatioiden toimintaan ja paikkatietomarkkinoihin.
Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, kuinka aineistoja välittäviin yrityksen kannattaisi reagoida paikkatietoaineistojen avautumiseen.

Toimintatapojen löytämiseksi tarkasteltiin aluksi avoimen aineiston määritelmää ja paikkatietojen avautumiseen johtaneita syitä ja lainsäädäntöä.
Kirjallisuusselvityksen jälkeen suoritettiin haastattelututkimus paikkatietoa hyödyntävissä ja tuottavissa organisaatioissa.
Haastatteluissa selvitettiin, kuinka organisaatioissa käytetään paikkatietoa, ja mitä haasteita paikkatiedon käytössä on ollut.
Lisäksi selvitettiin paikkatietojen avautumisen vaikutuksia organisaatioiden toimintaan, aineistojen avaamisessa ja avointen aineistojen käytössä ilmenneitä haasteita sekä haastateltavien näkemyksiä paikkatietoalan tulevaisuudesta.
Haastattelujen avulla selvitettiin, minkälaisia palveluja tai tuotteita organisaatiot tarvitsevat tulevaisuudessa aineistojen avautumisen myötä.

Haastateltavat valittiin suurista organisaatioista, joissa käytetään paljon paikkatietoa.
Paikkatietojen avautuminen ei ollut vielä vaikuttanut paljoa niiden toimintaan, sillä suuret organisaatiot reagoivat tyypillisesti muutokseen hitaasti.
Haastatteluissa kiivi ilmi, että suurissa organisaatioissa ei uskottu avointen aineistojen kilpailevan suljettujen, maksullisten aineistojen kanssa, joten perinteistä aineistojen välitystä ja kehitystä kannattaa jatkaa.
Avoimia aineistoja kuitenkin käytettiin mielellään liiketoiminnan tukena, joten yrityksille kannattaa tarjota niiden käytön helpottamiseen liittyviä palveluja, kuten rajapintoja ja konsultointia.
Suurimpia huolenaiheita aineistojen avautumisessa olivat avaamisesta ja aineistojen käsittelystä koituva lisätyö ja avointen aineistojen laatu.
Myös näihin haasteisiin kannattaa paikkatietoaineistoja ja -palveluja tarjoavan yrityksen kiinnittää huomiota ja tarjota apua ongelmien ratkaisuun.
