Abstract (eng): | The objective of this thesis was to study and apply different methods of simulating the global loads of ships as a structural detail using global and local FE models. Fatigue analyses of passenger ships were chosen as the target application. The fatigue analyses examined in this study are, however, valid for and applicable to all kinds of ships. Based on literary research of different global-local methods, five of the most commonly used methods were chosen for further comparison. The chosen methods are the embedded local model, submodeling, superelement, and adaptive meshing and interface element methods. The applicability of the methods to the fatigue analysis of ships was compared. Based on the comparison, the submodeling method was chosen as the most applicable. The chosen method was then tested using FE models of passenger ships. The submodeling method was applied in three different cases. The method was first compared with an analytic result to make sure that it gives reliable results. In practical applications, possible sources of error are discretisation errors in local and global FE models at the mesh densities typically used in fatigue analyses in the ship industry. Interpolation of the boundary conditions may also cause some discrepancy. This thesis nevertheless assumes that local FE models are error-free, because it is easy to ensure their adequate density. Thus, the only possible sources of error in the submodeIing method are interpolation of the boundary conditions and inaccuracies in the global FE model. These sources of error were studied individually. The results indicate that the submodeling method gives accurate results if, ideally, the simulation of the loads has been carried out using nodal displacements. The results in this ideal case confirm that the method does indeed give reliable results. In addition, this study verifies that the interpolation of boundary conditions in commercial programs is not a significant source of error. The most significant error in the fatigue analyses of ships is caused by the inaccuracy of global models. The error margin is, however, within acceptable limits at the mesh densities typically used in fatigue analyses in the ship industry. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia ja soveltaa erilaisia menetelmiä laivojen globaalien kuormien siirtämiseen tutkittavaan rakenneyksityiskohtaan käyttäen hyväksi globaaleja ja lokaaleja FE-malleja. Nain ollen ideaalitapauksen tulokset vahvistavat menetelmän toimivuuden. Tehdyissä tarkasteluissa virhe on kuitenkin hyväksyttävissä rajoissa laivateollisuuden väsymisanalyyseissä käyttämillä elementtiverkon tiheyksillä. |
