Abstract (eng): | The implementation of Automated Store Ordering (ASO) has enabled grocery retailers worldwide to attain remarkable improvements in both cost-efficiency and customer service. However, despite the attractiveness of the ASO concept, speciality retailers seem to be lagging behind grocery retailers in the implementation of ASO. The goal of this study is to examine which the prerequisites for ASO are, how well these prerequisites are fulfilled in different segments of speciality retail, and what the potential of ASO is in speciality retail. In addition, the goal is to produce new knowledge of speciality retail and to identify topics for future research. This study examines eight different segments of speciality retail. Results are attained through a literature review, almost thirty interviews, two case studies and two computer simulations. According to this study, the most essential prerequisites for ASO are: sufficiently long product life cycle, product specific identification, accurate and systematically monitored inventory/sales records, workable ordering system and sufficient delivery reliability of suppliers. How well these prerequisites are fulfilled, varies between the different segments of speciality retail. The prerequisites are best fulfilled in jewellery, book trade, home electronics and optical equipment. ASO enables remarkable benefits in speciality retail. However, it is noteworthy that the potential of ASO depends on the characteristics of each segment of speciality retail and its products. The potential of ASO seems to be biggest in jewellery, book trade and home electronics. The benefits of ASO in speciality retail seem to be the same as have been earlier attained in the grocery sector. The most essential benefits of ASO are: decreased out-of-stocks, decreased inventory levels, decreased work load in stores and more consistent processes. According to the case studies and computer simulations conducted in this study, the magnitude of these potential benefits is significant. This study offers new information on speciality retail. ASO in speciality retail interlinks very closely to different subareas of the ECR framework. Thus the ECR framework, which has earlier concentrated solely on grocery retail, seems to be adaptable to speciality retail as well. |
Abstract (fin): | Automaattisen myymälätäydennyksen avulla on saavutettu päivittäistavarakaupassa merkittäviä hyötyjä maailmanlaajuisesti. Erikoiskauppa on kehityksestä jäljessä, vaikka automaattisen myymälätäydennyksen periaate on sovellettavissa myös erikoiskauppaan. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää mitkä automaattisen myymälätäydennyksen ennakkoedellytykset ovat sekä kuinka hyvin ennakkoedellytykset täyttyvät erikoiskaupan eri toimialoilla ja mikä on automaattisen myymälätäydennyksen potentiaali erikoiskaupassa. Lisäksi tavoitteena on tuottaa uutta tietoa suhteellisen vähän tutkitusta erikoiskaupasta, sekä selvittää mahdollisia jatkotutkimuksen aiheita. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kahdeksaa erikoiskaupan toimialaa. Tutkimus tarjoaa uutta tutkimustietoa vähän tutkitusta erikoiskaupasta. Automaattinen myymälätäydennys erikoiskaupassa liittyy hyvin keskeisesti ECR-viitekehyksen eri osa-alueisiin. Siten aikaisemmin päivittäistavarakauppaan keskittynyt ECR-viitekehys näyttäisi olevan laajennettavissa myös erikoiskaupan puolelle. |
