Abstract (eng): The concept of hierarchical folders has for the last thirty years retained its status as the prevailing means for organizing information on personal computers, even though the model has been realized to be limiting in several ways.
Maintaining a logical and coherent folder structure as well as browsing to find previously stored information within the folder hierarchy has proven to be difficult for users.
At the same time search tools have improved in terms of speed and features, but users are still finding it difficult to find information from within their personal information collections.
This thesis seeks to map out the most important problems within current personal information retrieval interfaces on popular operating systems as well as propose measures to solve these problems.
The presented claims are backed up by a thorough literature review within relevant fields of research.
Guided tagging is presented as a new alternative data model for information organization on personal computers along with an interactive visual search interface optimized for ease of use and information retrieval effectiveness.
The experimental verification of the effectiveness of the proposed measures is left to be covered by future research.
Abstract (fin): Hierarkkiset kansiot ovat viimeisen kolmenkymmenen vuoden ajan säilyttäneet asemansa pääasiallisena tapana organisoida tietoa henkilökohtaisilla tietokoneilla, vaikka mallin on todettu olevan monin tavoin rajoittava.
