  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Importance of sustainability in the built environment sector has been growing during the past decades.
This trend and potential business around it has been recognized by different entities involved in real estate business.
A way to enter this potential business is sustainability business innovations.
However, it has been discovered that the built environment sector is not efficient in producing innovations, even though there clearly is demand for them.
Previous researches have focused on benefits that sustainability business innovations bring to the implementing company but none of them have focused on how shareholders value these innovations.
This leads to the following research questions:.

1.
Based on existing literature, how sustainability business innovations are seen in the built environment sector from shareholders' perspective?.

2.
Based on event studies, do sustainability business innovations have an impact on the market capitalization of the case companies?.

3.
Based on existing literature and event studies, how do shareholders value investments in sustainability business innovations in the built environment sector?.

This Thesis was conducted by means of the event study research method.
Event study can be used for measuring impact of certain announcements on market capitalization.
The findings of the literature review indicate that shareholders should value sustainability business innovations positively in the built environment sector.
Empirical evidence from the event study supported this.
The key finding of this Thesis is that sustainability business innovation announcements and share valuation of construction companies are associated together and they seem to be positively correlated.
However, there was not enough data for making similar inferences for real estate investment companies.

Further evidence for the findings of this Thesis could be found by conducting interviews with investors who actively invest in companies operating the built environment sector.
These findings are useful when forming questions for the possible interviews.
Abstract (fin): Kestävän kehityksen merkitys rakennetun ympäristön (RYM) alueella on kasvanut huomattavasti viimeisien vuosikymmenien aikana.
Tämä tarjoaa mahdollisuuden uuteen liiketoimintaan, jonka myös RYM-alueella toimivat yritykset ovat huomanneet.
Kestävän kehityksen innovaatiot ovat yksi tapa päästä käsiksi tähän kasvavaan markkinaan.
On kuitenkin huomattu, että RYM-alueella toimivat yritykset eivät ole kovin tehokkaita tuottamaan innovaatiota, vaikka niille selvästikin olisi kysyntää.
Aiemmat tutkimukset tältä alalta ovat lähinnä keskittyneet siihen, millaisia etuja kestävän kehityksen innovaatiot tuovat itse yrityksille, mutta eivät siihen, miten yritysten osakkeenomistajat arvostavat näitä innovaatioita.
Tämä johtaa kolmeen tutkimuskysymykseen:.

1.
Millä tavoin osakkeenomistajat näkevät kestävän kehityksen innovaatiot RYM-alueella olemassa olevan kirjallisuuden perusteella?.

2.
Event studyyn perustuen, onko kestävän kehityksen innovaation julkaisemisella vaikutusta yrityksen markkina-arvoon?.

3.
Olemassa olevaan kirjallisuuteen ja event studyyn perustuen, miten osakkeenomistajat arvostavat kestävän kehityksen innovaatioita RYM-alueella?.

Tämä työ on suoritettu käyttäen event study tutkimusmenetelmää.
Event studyssa voidaan mitata tietyn julkistuksen vaikutusta julkisen yrityksen markkina-arvoon.

Kirjallisuusosion perusteella osakkeenomistajien tulisi arvostaa kestävän kehityksen innovaatioita RYM-alueella.
Empiiriset tulokset tukivat tätä johtopäätöstä.
Tämän työn päälöytö on, että kestävän kehityksen innovaatiot ja rakennusyritysten osakkeiden arvossa on yhteys, ja että ne tuntuvat korreloivan positiivisesti keskenään.
Empiiriset tulokset kuitenkin rajoittuivat vain rakennusyhtiöihin, koska kiinteistösijoitusyhtiöitä varten ei ollut tarpeeksi dataa käytettävissä.

Tämän työn päälöytöä tukemaan voisi tehdä haastatteluja, joissa etsitään sijoittajien näkemyksiä kestävän kehityksen innovaatioihin rakennetun ympäristön alueella.
Kyseiset löydökset ovat avuksi muodostaessa kysymyksiä haastatteluja varten.
