Abstract (eng): | In the past, all the attention in wastewater treatment has given mainly to the amounts of nutrients and organic matter in wastewater. Lately, more attention has been started to pay to harmful or hazardous chemicals and other substances that end up to the receiving water with effluent. Conventional wastewater treatment plants have not been designed to remove the harmful nor the dangerous chemicals from wastewater. The main objective of this thesis is to research different kinds of wastewater treatment technologies, which would help to reduce the chemical emissions from effluents. The focus in this thesis is the removal of the priority substances of the HELCOM BSAP from effluent. Different wastewater treatment methods, theories, and their current use were investigated using the state of the art research literature and other earlier studies related to the topic. The advanced wastewater treatment technologies, which were chosen for this thesis, are membrane bioreactor, advanced oxidation processes, electrocoagulation, electrochemical oxidation (electro oxidation), membrane filtration, adsorption using activated carbon and low cost adsorbent and ion exchange. They can all remove several contaminants efficiently from wastewater at least on a laboratory scale. The advanced wastewater treatment technologies are still not ready to be applied widely in wastewater treatment plants (except membrane bioreactors, which are in use). Before the applications of the advanced wastewater treatments are viable widely and on a large scale, more models, multi-component studies, large-scale studies and experiences, comparison studies between different advanced wastewater treatment technologies and economic studies and analyses are required. The cost efficiency of the technologies should also be improved. Advanced wastewater treatment technologies are expensive, and it is obvious that they are not widely used if it is not mandatory. If the wastewater legislation becomes stricter in the future, the use of one or several advanced wastewater treatment technologies described in this thesis could be one way to meet the new wastewater treatment requirements. |
Abstract (fin): | Jätevesien käsittelyssä on aikaisemmin kiinnitetty huomiota pääsiassa ravinteiden ja orgaanisen aineen määrään jätevesissä. |
