Abstract (eng): | The evolution from second-generation networks into the third generation networks (3G) brings many new features for the mobile users. Most of the new features require some sort of signal processing from the 3G-network infrastructure. The signal processing of the 3G networks is done by Digital Signal Processors (DSPs). Digital Signal Processors are used, for example, for speech enhancements, transcoding and protocol transformations between different networks. Effective signal processing resource management is required in order to efficiently utilize the signal processing power of the systems. The main goal of the thesis was to find improvements to the signal processing resource management system used in certain Nokia 3G network elements. For this task, several resource allocation schemes were evaluated by simulating the resource management software in the PC environment. Simulations were done by first programming the evaluated algorithms and running them in the simulation software, which was developed as a part of the thesis. The simulation software clearly showed its usefulness in resource management algorithm evaluation and its power in resource management software development. The algorithm evaluations confirmed that the on-line nature of the problem makes it is difficult, if not impossible, to find any fundamental improvements to the algorithms -especially if all the predetermined requirements are followed strictly. The algorithms can be optimised for a certain call type but the optimal solution for the mixed call case is much harder to achieve. |
Abstract (fin): | Kehitys toisen sukupolven (2G) matkapuhelinverkosta kolmannen sukupolven verkkoon (3G) mahdollistaa useita uusia toiminnallisuuksia liikkuviin puhelinlaitteisiin. Useimmat uudet ominaisuudet vaativat 3G-verkolta ainakin jonkinlaista signaalinkäsittelyä. Resurssien hallinta-algoritmien laatua arvioidaan simuloimalla resurssienhallinta ohjelmistoa PC-ympäristössä. Evaluointi suoritettiin ohjelmoimalla arvioitavat algoritmit ja ajamalla niitä simulointiohjelmistolla, joka on kehitetty osana tätä diplomityötä. Tavoitteena oli löytää yksinkertaisia algoritmeja, joilla minimoidaan loogisen resurssien hallinnan aiheuttama käyttämättömien resurssien määrä. Lisäksi työssä toteutettiin algoritmien evaluointia helpottavia työkaluja. Simulointiohjelmisto osoitti käyttökelpoisuutensa resurssien hallinnan algoritmien kehityksen apuna sekä apuna ohjelmiston kehityksessä yleensä. Simuloinneissa ilmeni dynaamisten ongelmien perustavaa laatua oleva ratkaisun vaikeus, tai jopa mahdottomuus, varsinkin jos systeemille asetetut rajoitukset huomioidaan ehdottomasti. Algoritmien optimointi tietyn tyyppisille puheluille on mahdollista, mutta optimaalinen ratkaisun löytäminen sekaliikenteellä on huomattavasti vaikeampaa. |
