Abstract:This study examines the embodied experiences of women travelling alone. The paper analyses the links between gendered power and surveillance. The survey consisted of 39 interviews of female tourists aged 30-70 who identified as solo female travellers living in UK. The findings reveal that the interviewed women were generally aware of sexualized gazes focused upon them when travelling alone. The nature and extent of the surveillance experienced by women taking solo holidays varied widely according to where, when and by whom they perceived themselves to be observed.
