Abstract: | This article synthesizes and integrates the existing research, and creates a typology of districts based on the continuous dimensions of need for coordination and centralization of control. It is illustrated why different types of industrial districts have different structures and different competitive results. Four typical industrial districts are presented, and the benefits and costs of location in the district are discussed for each. |
