Abstract:In this article, it is argued that metonymy is a key linguistic resource that reproduces national cultural identities and differences in media accounts of international mergers and acquisitions (M&As). It is concentrated on two cases: the acquisition of American IBM Personal Computer Division (PCD) by the Chinese company Lenovo and the acquisition of American Anheuser-Busch (A-B) by the Belgian-Brazilian company InBev. The results indicate that national metonymy affects the construction of emotive frames, stereotypes, ideological differences, and threats.
