| Tiivistelmä: | Eight months after the new notes and coins became the legal tender of the eurozone, it is interesting to see the short and medium term effects. It has been widely reported that the changeover was quick and painless, and presented few problems to retailers. The author answers the question what about their customers. Consumers had two expectations: in the short term, they foresaw price rises as retailers converted to the new currency. In the medium term, on the other hand, they expected that price convergence across the eurozone would tend to drive them to the lowest level. The author also answers the question what evidence is emerging of either tendency. |
