| Tiivistelmä: | The main Ukrainian nationalist organisation, Rukh, became established only in 1989. The referendum indicated that general mass support for keeping Ukraine part of some broader political community with the other Soviet republics. This article seeks to evaluate these arguments empirically in the Ukrainian case using mass public opinion data.
