Tiivistelmä:This article deals with the strengths and weaknesses of lean management thinking in the food and farming industry in the United Kingdom (UK). Through a case study of meat supply, it is argued that the adoption of lean practices (hereafter as: prs.) internally may be appropriate for all participants (here as: partcps.) in the industry. However, the inter-organizational aspects of lean prs. may not be easy, nor appropriate, to apply in practice for many partcps., out of which for some, especially for the multiple retailers, the adoption of lean prs. may lead to a positive outcome with stable and/or increasing profitability. However, for the majority of partcps. in the industry supply chains, the adoption of lean prs. may result in a high level of dependency on buyers and to low or declining levels of profitability.
