Tiivistelmä:The survival of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is vital to the economic growth of countries. This survival depends largely on the availability of human capital in the SME. The author examines the features of entrepreneurs/managers, the top management teams and the boards of directors in Dutch SMEs. The results show how although the entrepreneur/manager has the biggest role in the decision making of the SME, he/she has in two cases out of three created a top management team in the SME. This way the CEO and top-management team can combine their knowledge about the business the SME operates in, in order to build up necessary company know-how. The CEOs in SMEs may have only limited knowledge about governance; less than half of the companies have a supervisory board. The article concludes how the CEOs of SMEs should be made more aware of all the networking and knowledge sharing advantages the top-management team and supervisory board members can provide.
