Tiivistelmä:The Basic Question method (BQM) involves asking one basic question. Often a research project revolves around one central question. The idea of BQM is that those who refuse to participate in the survey are asked a question, the basic question, and in that way the researcher gains information on the differences between respondents and non-respondents. Moreover, the method determines non-response bias. The main questions of the study are whether the BQM does enable the researcher to collect information on the central substantial variable of the study from a bigger number of non-respondents than they can collect with the ‘refusal conversion’ procedure and whether respondents and refusers differ in their answers to the basic question. The study shows that the answer to both questions is affirmative.
