Tiivistelmä:This paper examines how employment protection laws (EPL) affect joblessness and temporary employment by demographic group. The study exploits International Adult Literacy Survey microdata for Canada, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK and the US from 1994-1998. The results show that stricter EPL increases relative non-employment rates for youth, immigrants, and, possibly, women. EPL raises also the relative incidence of temporary employment for wage and salary employees in case of low skilled, youth, native and immigrant women. These impacts are positively related to country's level of collective bargaining coverage.
