Tiivistelmä:Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are widely scrutinized by European regulatory authorities. Even though the authorities themselves assert to be concerned of monopoly power and consumer protection, only little evidence supporting the claim has been found in recent research. This paper explores the motives behind M&A regulation by studying whether regulatory intervention has been more likely when European companies are damaged by increased competition. The results of the analysis support the suspicion of protectionist motivations by the European regulatory authorities during 1990s.
