| Tiivistelmä: | This paper studies the impact of shiftwork on shift workers and investigates the demographic variables which moderate this impact. Consistently with antecedent research, the findings of this study reveal that shiftwork has a wide range of effects on employees: shiftwork has a significant impact on the employees' health, family and social lives. The findings suggest that among young employees shiftwork increases absenteeism, whereas older workers suffer from tiredness and lack of motivation. Due to irregular working hours shiftwork also has a major effect on married shift workers' marriage and family lives. No clear differences in the impacts of shiftwork on the basis of gender were found, but job type rotation was found to moderate shiftwork impacts for workers in heavier jobs. |
