Tiivistelmä:Prior research indicates that long working hours and unconventional shift work exposes employees to increased risk of injury and illness. The probability of ill-fated errors is also found to increase with long hours. This article reviews the research history of long working hours and employee health, and their ethical implications are presented. These implications include mandatory or unpaid overtime labor, employee coersion, political basis for regulation of working hours, limits on voluntary assumption of risk, societal benefits of equitable distribution of available working hours, inequities between genders related to working hours and employer responsibilities to protect non-employees from the effects of excessively tight work schedules.
