Tiivistelmä:This study was designed to explore reactions to many commonly used termination interview practices (henceforth as: t-i-prcs). Two scenario-based experiments explored the effectiveness of having a 3rd party (that is, an human resource (HR) manager or a security guard) present, mentioning the employee's positive characteristics (as: chars.) and contributions, and using alone, discrete escort, or public escort (here as: p-esc.) modes of exit. Assessed were perceptions of being treated with respect and empathy, levels of anger, and the likelihood of complaining to others and taking legal action. Support for the effectiveness of specific t-i-prcs. was mixed. Particularly, in Experiment 1, 3rd party presence was viewed as showing a lack of respect, while mentioning positive chars. was generally viewed favourably. Experiment 2 showed the favourable effects of mentioning positive chars. were weakened by a security guard escort, and actually reversed and became negative in the case p-esc. A p-esc. also produced the highest levels of anger. These results suggest that multiple aspects of the t-i-prcs. should be carefully considered when developing managerial policies.
