Tiivistelmä:A descriptive model of firm growth is proposed. It is assumed that learning processes are conditional on existing competencies of the firm with its founders. In order to explain why some firms are zero-learning and what kind of differences there are compared with the growing ones, it is hypothesized that both start-up size and founders' pre-entry history affect the firm's ability to adjust to market. Based on a sample of more than 3,900 Italian firms born from 1999 to 2000, it is found that individual competencies influence start-up size, but not directly growth. Furthermore, there is also found a significant non-linear relationship between start-up size and growth, which implies that firms born smaller than a given size grow significantly less.
