Tiivistelmä:In this study, Adler and Rosen's theories are compared regarding the stardom and popularity of musical artists through the impact of local linguistic policies (henceforth as: l-l-pols.) on consumers' decisions to buy recorded music (CDs). With l-l-pols. implemented in Catalonia and the Basque Country, Spain serves as an ideal quasi 'natural experiment' for theory testing. Using a multilevel regression framework, there are two main results: 1. contrary to Rosen's predictions, the impact of l-l-pols. on the probability of buying music CDs is positive, and 2. l-l-pols. seem to contribute to increasing the production of music CDs in local languages which increases the local artists' popularity with their audiences.
