Tiivistelmä:It is proposed that any potential learning effects depend on the type of experience (henceforth as: exp.) Particularly, it is hypothesized that alliance exploitation (herein as: expln.) exp. has positive effects on R&D project performance, whereas alliance exploration (as: explrn.) exp. has negative effects. It is further posited that an internal explrn. competence allows firms to leverage their external expln. exp. more fully. In contrast, when firms combine internal expln. exp. with external explrn. exp., the negative effects on R&D project performance get more pronounced. In order to test this integrative model of organizational learning, utilized is a unique and detailed dataset of more than 410 R&D projects in biotechnology performed by large pharmaceutical companies from 1980 to 2000. There is found support for this study's model by using a competing risk event history model predicting successful product approval vs. project termination.
