Tiivistelmä:Increasing dispersion in the returns to graduate education in Britain is reported. This development is related to rising overqualification (henceforth as: o-q). 'Real' and 'Formal' o-q. are distinguished, according to whether it is accompanied by underutilization of skill. Employees in the former group experience greater, and more sharply rising, pay penalties compared to those in the latter group. Real o-q., but not Formal o-q., is associated with job dissatisfaction. While Formal o-q. has been increasing over time, Real o-q. has been steady or rising only slowly. It is herein normatively implied that the state should offer regular information on the distribution of the returns to graduate education.
