| Tiivistelmä: | Inspired by the claim that discussions of the history of management studies often suffer from a lack of adequate historical contextualization, this paper offers a re-reading of the work of the widely known critic C. Wright Mills. Focusing on Millss study of American labour in the 1940s, the article seeks to return his work to the situations in which it took shape: its social, political and philosophical context. The article suggests a fresh way of reading Mills, the manner in which he exemplifies a certain way of living a critical scholarly life. The focus is on tentative and provisional elements in his project as he establishes himself as both political theorist and actor. The significance of Mills to critical management studies today is reconsidered. |
