| Tiivistelmä: | In this article it is argued that "gains" from R&D outsourcing need to be compared with the "pains" that origin from a reduction of company-specific resources, the decline of integrative capabilities and the high need for management attention. Based on a panel dataset of innovating companies in Germany, evidence was found for an inverse U-shaped relationship between R&D outsourcing and innovation performance. The extent to which companies engage in internal R&D and by the breadth of formal R&D collaborations have the impact of increase on the effectiveness of R&D outsourcing. |
