Tiivistelmä: | This article studies the connection between university knowledge spillovers and new business location in high-technology sectors. The focus is on the contribution to the formation of new businesses through spillovers arising from three main university outputs: knowledge-based graduates, research activity, and technological knowledge. A new dataset on 604 companies and 63 universities in Spain is constructed and grouped across 36 geographical areas from 2001 to 2004. Controlling for various traditional cost factors and agglomeration characteristics, the results suggest that university spillovers are relevant in explaining the location of new high-technology businesses in Spain. Furthermore, the analysis draws attention to the relevance of graduates as the main spillover source, while research activities and university technology do not affect significantly. |
