Tiivistelmä:This article studies the innovative actions of entrepreneurs, particularly their tendency of revealing the intellectual capital that stems from their research efforts either in public knowledge (publications) or private knowledge (patents). Using data from the National Research Council within the U.S. National Academies from their survey of firms that received National Institutes of Health phase II Small Business Innovation Research awards between 1992-2001, it is found that entrepreneurs having academic background more likely publish their intellectual capital compared to entrepreneurs having business backgrounds, who more likely patent their intellectual capital. Also, when universities are research partners, their presence is found to complement the tendencies of academic entrepreneurs, however not to offset those of business entrepreneurs.
