Tiivistelmä: | This article examines the extent to which the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise in the UK can be explained by a set of quantitative indicators. Three units of assessment are investigated: business and management, economics and econometrics, and accounting and finance. It is found that each of these components of research activity correlate highly with multiple quantitative indicators. It is also found that the judgement of the Research Assessment Exercise panels was biased in favour of Russell Group universities. The findings support the use of quantitative indicators in the research assessment process, especially a journal quality index. |
