Tiivistelmä:In a world containing limited resources, it could be argued that companies aspiring to be good corporate citizens need to concentrating on using resources most efficiently. User value and environmental harm are created in supply chains and thus it could be argued that company business ethics should expand from the company to the entire value chain. Starting with a delineation of the relations between business ethics, corporate sustainability, and the stakeholder concept, this paper suggests that supply chains generally have a great potential for innovations in sustainable development. This potential could be emphasized with system thinking and using change management knowledge to promote not only technological innovations but also innovations within organizational improvement. Process models and performance indicators are proposed as means of highlighting improvement potential and thus rejecting normative business ethics' requirements to an opertionalizable corporate level: Business ethics should focus on maximizing stakeholder value relative to harm done. Our results imply that concentrating on supply chains exposes previously unknown innovation potential seemingly related to limited system understanding. We assume that improved visibility of opportunities acts as a driver for change. Results also emphasize the importance of concentrating on sustainability effects of the core business and clearly relating created value to harm done.
