| Tiivistelmä: | The role of redundancy payments is increasing in Britain. The paper focuses on the extra-statutory redundancy payments (ESRP), where redundancy payments are made in absence of legal coercion. The first part of the paper presents some stylized facts about ESRP to guide to theory in the second part. Redundancy pay is discussed in labor economics concerning payroll tax, implicit contracts, etc. but mostly as an exogenous institution. Only recently have attempts been made to explain the institution. A microeconomic foundations of the explanations are critically reviewed. |
