Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Knowledge work is growing and increasingly affects a company's business and success.
Thus, the workplace design and management needs to support knowledge work processes of the company's employees.
In fact, providing workplace functionality is no longer sufficient; the workplace needs high levels of usability, which is a richer concept than the production-oriented functionality.
In order to develop and design usable workplaces, information about the current usability of existing workplaces is required.
However, workplace assessments often neglect usability and focus solely on the functionality of buildings and workplaces.

In this research the Usability Walkthrough-method is developed further for assessing the usability of Business Parks from the user organization's perspective.
Crucial in determining the applicability of the method is the quality of the information gained.
The findings need to contain information about the Business Park's capability to support the user organization's goals and work processes.
The secondary goal of this research is to gather information about the usability of the case studies, which can be used when designing new Business Parks and developing existing ones.

A development research was carried out, in which a solution to a practical problem was developed based on theory and earlier research.
The solution, an application of the Usability Walkthrough, was tested by assessing the usability of three Business Parks.
Additionally, in a workshop setting the experiences gained by applying the method were compared to the experiences of similar studies conducted by five international researchers.

The developed method is suitable for assessing the usability of Business Parks, especially with regards to the common areas.
The assessment provided information about how and for which purposes the premises are used, and critical factors restricting the completion of tasks were identified.
However, the gained information concerning the user organizations' own premises remained on an operational level.
Nevertheless, the method can be used for assessing the usability of organizations' own premises, but the framework needs to be developed based on more detailed information about the company's strategies, goals and work processes.
This was not possible however within the limits of this research.
Abstract (fin): Tietotyön lisääntyessä työympäristöjen vaikutus organisaatioiden toimintaan ja menestykseen korostuu entisestään.
Työympäristöt tulee suunnitella ja ylläpitää niin, että ne tukevat organisaation toimintaa ja työntekijöiden työprosesseja mahdollisimman hyvin.
Enää ei riitä, että työympäristöt ovat toiminnallisia, niiden tulee olla myös käytettäviä.
Työympäristöjen kehittäminen sekä uusien tilojen suunnittelu vaatii näin ollen tietoa olemassa olevista kohteista ja näiden käytettävyydestä.
Perinteiset rakennusten arviointimenetelmät keskittyvät kuitenkin usein rakennusten tekniseen suorituskykyyn, eli toiminnallisuuteen, eivätkä näin ollen anna tarvittavaa tietoa työympäristöjen käytettävyydestä.

Tässä tutkimuksessa kehitetään ja testataan sovellusta käytettävyyskatselmuksesta, jolla yrityspuistojen käytettävyyttä voidaan arvioida käyttäjäorganisaatioiden näkökulmasta.
Ratkaisevana tekijänä menetelmän toimivuudessa on esille tulevien asioiden sisältö ja laatu; onnistutaanko menetelmän avulla keräämään tietoa tilojen käytettävyydestä ja kyvystä tukea käyttäjien tavoitteita ja työprosesseja, vai pysyvätkö löydökset operatiivisella tasolla ja toiminnallisuuden piirissä.
Tutkimuksen osatavoitteena on kerätä tietoa kolmen yrityspuiston käytettävyydestä. jota voidaan hyödyntää kohteiden käytettävyyden parantamisessa sekä uusien yrityspuistojen kehittämisessä.

Tutkimus tehtiin kehitystutkimuksena, jossa teorian ja aikaisempien tutkimusten perusteella kehitettiin ratkaisuehdotus käytännön ongelmaan.
Ratkaisua, käytettävyyskatselmusta, testattiin soveltamalla sitä kolmessa yrityspuistossa ja analysoimalla saatuja tuloksia, sekä vertaamalla menetelmästä kertyneitä kokemuksia kansainvälisten tutkijoiden suorittamiin käytettävyyden arviointeihin.

Kehitetty käytettävyyskatselmus sopii menetelmänä hyvin etenkin yrityspuistojen yhteisten tilojen käytettävyyden tutkimiseen.
Katselmuksen avulla saatiin tietoa siitä, miten ja mihin tarkoituksiin tiloja käytetään sekä pystyttiin tunnistamaan tekijöitä, jotka rajoittavat tehtävien suorittamisen.
Tutkimuksessa saadut tiedot yritysten omista tiloista pysyivät kuitenkin operatiivisella tasolla.
Käytettävyyskatselmusta voidaan kuitenkin hyödyntää myös yritysten omien tilojen käytettävyyden tutkimiseen, mutta silloin kysymysrunkoa tulee kehittää perustuen tietoihin kyseessä olevan yrityksen strategioista. tavoitteista ja työprosesseista.
Kyseisen tiedon keraaminen jokaisesta katselmukseen osallistuvasta organisaatiosta ei kuitenkaan tämän tutkimuksen puitteissa ollut mahdollista.
